Commonsense skin care makes good sense at any age, and starts with taking positive action to avoid all externally-created skin damage, in particular from sun and wind. As you move into your forties, skin problems can increase dramatically (and this is particularly so for women).

Past 40 your skin faces greater challenges with fewer resources

After age 40 your levels of various hormones and growth factors will decrease increasingly rapidly. Damage to your cells will have accumulated over the prior decades, especially for your skin. The rate of renewal of your skin cells will slow dramatically too.

Women in particular experience dramatic hormonal transformations as they approach and then go through the menopause. Reductions and changes in her hormones will reduce the production of collagen, elastin and several other important skin components. In turn this will lead to reductions in the production of sebum and this will this lead to skin thinning and dryness.

For most men over 40, declining levels of testosterone can initiate similar (although much less visible) consequences.

Age-related skin inflammation problems also manifest themselves. Inflammation can increase the production of harmful free radicals, which in turn may lead to cell damage, skin degradation and other skin problems.

These accelerating changes can lead to significant changes for your skin:

* Drying and thickening of the outer layer (the epidermis) leaving the skin looking dull, and dessicated

* Thinning of the dermis (the skin’s mid layer), which in term leads to reducing firmness and softness. This speeds up the development of lines and wrinkles

* The development of wrinkles, lines and creases, especially in areas where facial expressions lead to repeated creasing of the skin. An aging dermis no longer fully recovers from regular and continuous folding of the skin

* Patchy coloring, skin blotchiness, blemishes, breaking capillary veins

* Reductions of subcutaneous fat and a steady weakening in facial muscles, eventually lead to a gaunt expression

But it doesn’t have to be like that! Aging cannot be avoided, but its effects certainly can be. Some of the effects of aging can - in some cases - actually be reversed, others can be put “on hold” almost indefinitely.

Here is a brief list of the major problems with aging skin, and how they can be avoided

Ensure hydration Dryness is very common after 40. Proper hydration is needed for every other step of a skin care program to work properly. Wash with a moisturizing soap and clean fresh water, avoid alcohol wipes, and of course, avoid sun and wind much as possible. Drink plenty of water.

To reduce wrinkles and fine lines use retinoids (e.g. Retin A) and vitamin C. Believed to be very effective are lipoic acid and also copper peptides. Remember however, that some of these suggestions may be right for one person but not for another.

Estrogen and progesterone Recent medical research suggests that replenishment of estrogens and progesterone using external application improves skin hydration, reduces wrinkles, and produces several other beneficial effects for women at or past their menopause. Remember however, that any treatment should be embarked upon only with the approval of your physician.

Exfoliation After forty, your epidermis (outer skin) will probably become drier and thicker because its cells are not being replaced as quickly as they were. Your skin could then look dull, dry, and patchy. Occasional exfoliation can then help restore a youthful look and feel by removing dead keratin. But it is very important not to exfoliate too much. Always start with a mild exfoliating agent (like table sugar scrub). If this is insufficient, try a mild chemical exfoliant.

Skin Colour and texture Age spots and blotchiness will become increasingly common as you pass the 40 mark. These are mostly caused by the increased production of melanin in the skin. The problem can sometimes be alleviated by topical lightening agents, which slow the production of melanin.

Motion wrinkles They develop in any area of the face where movement results in folding of the skin. They become common after 40 and are very resistant to traditional treatments such as anti-wrinkles agents, laser resurfacing or chemical peels.

Anti Aging Botox Treatment However, motion wrinkles respond surprisingly well to anti-aging botox injections (botulinum toxin). This appears to be because Botox effectively stifles movements that cause the problem.

Botox can reduce horizontal lines in your forehead, crow’s feet around the eyes, scowl lines between the eyebrows, and hideous wrinkles than can appear in your upper lip. Botox is less good for smile lines and useless for wrinkles which are NOT caused by facial movements.

Professional Intervention If your skin defiantly resists all these self-administered treatments, you may consider skin treatments performed (usually) by medical professionals. It is most important to choose the right treatment and the right doctor.

Available professional treatments include lasers, dermal fillers, chemical peels, Botox injections and so on. Some of the available treatments are invasive, painful, and all are very expensive.

Best Anti Aging Cream However, anti aging treatments have now come of age, and there is available a user-applied non-invasive Botox alternative. You will find out all about this great anti aging wrinkle cream, and learn why it works so well, at my HGHscene web site (see the final paragraph). You’ll also find see some truly amazing “before and after” photos of skin which has been treated.

This new anti aging skin care product offers:

* A 33% decrease in wrinkle density

* A 23% decrease in the volume of wrinkles

* A 20% reduction in the depth of wrinkles

Buy yourself some Sunglasses One final suggestion! It may seem silly, but one of the best (and cheapest) wrinkle prevention tools available is a pair of good quality sunglasses. If you are frequently out and about in bright sunlight, you’ll probably squint a lot (we all do, even if we don’t realise it).

This type of long-period squinting can last for minutes or hours, and over weeks or months this will lead to permanent skin wrinkling - mostly around the eyes, but also further afield.

This is particularly marked after 40, but is something that can start much earlier for many. Their skin may seem to recover when they are younger, but longer term damage is still being done.

Moral: don’t wait, when the wrinkles appear it may be too late! Take action before you seem to need to!
